This page will present a growing wealth of genealogy resources for Carpenter researchers. The idea is not to reinvent the wheel, but to point people in the right direction. The more valuable sections will hopefully become those that are specific to Carpenter family history. As I convert materials left over from the old design, I am finding that I may want to split this material up into multiple pages to make navigation easier. Bear with me for now, I will get to that sooner or later.

Toward that goal of collecting resources, let me be clear. I am a technical guy. I have some great research skills when it comes to hunting things down on the Internet, but I am not a genealogist. I have never been in an archive and I would not know my way around a county courthouse. So what is my point?

I will begin this page of resources with a sampling of whatever I can find on my own. I will link to some established genealogy resources that should be useful to everyone. Then, I am very hopeful that one or more of you you who are actively engaged in genealogy research will share with me the best of the resources you have identified regarding genealogy in general, and especially resources to places, materials, and locations that are of use to Carpenter's when searching for their family history. Genealogy Education & Ethics

This section is reserved to promote resources for educating new and learning genealogy researchers about best practices. What about a code of ethics for researchers? What about proper research techniques? Why is it important NOT to touch the oldest documents and photographs? Why are heat and light the enemy of old documents? What should a new researcher know in order to protect and preserve historical documents? Why should families seriously consider donating their priceless historical treasures to a historical society or a museum?

A poorly educated researcher could corrupt or even inadvertently destroy irreplaceable and therefore priceless history through their ignorance. Please do not be one of those amateurs. Learn how to conduct yourself professionally when performing research.

Kentucky Resources

The Kentucky Historical Society was founded in 1836 to collect and preserve the artifacts, papers and other documentation of Kentucky’s history. Now in the 21st century, our mission statement has grown broader to reflect our place in the global community.

That is all very nice, but the part that is most significant to Carpenter's is that the KHS contains significant items of Carpenter family history, including the original family bible, and some substantial collections of Carpenter Family Papers. Comment: Plus, the KDL contains an online list for the entire Catherine Carpenter Papers collection which resides at the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort, KY. Look for "Carpenter" in their serach engine under entire record and you will see the listing for "Carpenter Family Papers" come up in the listing. There is a great wealth of family historical papers and items contained in this collection.

Hustonville, Ky - Carpenter Family Fort, a.k.a. Fort Carpenter, a.k.a. Carpenter's Station.

Local Historian, Allan Leach. Allan Leach is a virtual fount of information on Carpenter Family history, as well as other families of the area. He is an avid researcher and carries much of our family history in his head. Mr. Leach also has in his possession several historical items pertaining to Carpenter history. it would be wise if someone were to document his collection for posterity. Also, interviewing Allan Leach could be a job that would occupy a dedicated family researcher for many weeks, if not ongoing for years. You can contact Allan Leach by postal mail at: .

If you have additional resources, such as the names and contact information for local historians, or residents with long memories, then please send them along. We should all work to gather this information before another generation passes into history. Be assured, the actual addresses are encrypted in a script to prevent them from being easily copied by automatic means. In most cases, it will take a human mind and a hand on a mouse to copy the contact information.

Description: Established near this site, 1780, by the brothers Adam, Conrad and John Carpenter. All were American Revolutionary soldiers, sons of George Carpenter, Sr., who died while serving with the First Virginia Regiment. One of early stations through which the settlement of Kentucky was achieved. Carpenters once owned 3,000 acres in vicinity of this station.
